Medicare Advantage Plans

Part C is different than original Medicare. This plan stands on its own. You do not buy a Medigap policy if you have Part C coverage. Medicare Part C is also referred to as a Medicare Advantage plan. This is a plan sold by a private insurance company that combines Parts A and B to provide coverage. Medicare Advantage plans offer services through a health maintenance organization (HMO) or a similar provider organization.

Many Part C plans cover things that original Medicare does not, such as vision and dental services. They may also cover the cost of prescriptions. Each provider has its own rules, and the cost of the services can vary greatly by provider and by area. It’s best to talk to a knowledgeable insurance person who can tell you what’s available locally before deciding what you want. Ask what is covered, what the cost of the coverage is, and what the rules are regarding treatment, such as if a referral is needed before you can see a specialist or what if you want a second opinion on something.
